IIT's joining hands to create quality education for free

In a combined effort Govt of India is funding a programme titled 'National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning'.
Part of this effort the premier technology institues of India , 7 IIT's and IISc have joined hands to create quality course materials available for free for students. These courses are available for free for nay one.

This is a good effort to get more quality engineers from noral engineering colleges.

What is NPTEL

The main objective of NPTEL program is to enhance the quality of engineering education in the country by developing curriculum based video and web courses. This is being carried out by IITs (Seven), IISc Bangalore and other premier institutions as a collaborative project. At IIT Madras, the project is evolving and it is our intent to provide learning materials, digitally taped classroom lectures, supplementary materials and links to state-of-the art research materials in every subject possible. Currently samples from approximately 70 courses offered by faculty in various departments and to students at all levels (B.Tech, M.Tech, M.S., M.Sc., Ph.D.) are given here. Approximately 140 courses are in various stages of preparation and distribution through internet.

All the faculty members are personally involved in the making of their respective courses in the electronic form. Our purpose is to supplement classroom lectures. The latter are compulsory for students and IIT Madras stipulates that students attend 75 percent of lectures to qualify for their examinations.

Microsoft, perhaps buoyed by good early feedback of its "Duet" product that turns its Office suite into an interface with SAP's ERP applications, has designs on doing something similar for other business applications. At the Tech Ed conference last week, Microsoft announced its strategy for a new line of business interoperability (LOBi), tools for further transforming Office into a front-end for Microsoft's own products, as well as making it an interface with third-party ERP, CRM, SCM, and business intelligence and content management systems.

LOBi will build on, and help to tie together, various products coming out of Redmond in the coming year, including Office 2007 and Office SharePoint Server 2007, both due out in October; Exchange Server 2007, a second beta of which is due out next month; and Office Live Communications Server "12," which is due out next year.

HP Opens Up the HP-UX Roadmap

If Hewlett-Packard has been a little skittish about talking about its roadmap for its HP-UX Unix variant in recent years, that has had nothing to do with its commitment to the platform. HP's shyness over the years, however, has had everything to do with the difficulties that HP had coping with two distinct RISC/Unix platforms in the wake of the Compaq merger five years ago. That's water under the bridge now, and with rival Sun Microsystems hogging all the Unix press with its Solaris 10 product and OpenSolaris project, HP is ready to talk about its plans for HP-UX.

HP is willing to talk some, not a lot. So don't get that excited.

Pixsy is a Visual search engine which collects a thumbnail image from an RSS feed automatically and then associate words, or metadata, with that image based on the news or information from where it came. Pixsy then uses that data to associate images with search terms.

All new Ask.com search launched.
The new Ask.com looks great, the home page is simple, with a search box and there is a configurable 'Search Tools' menu on the right side of the page. The search is fast and the results page is simple and clean.

The search results page is packed with lot of features, it has only top and bottom ads , making the results more clearly visible to users. The right side has two search option to either Narrow down the search of Expand the search.

The 'Advanced Search' page also has improved options and an user configurable 'Include or Exclude Words' option.
The Image search also has improved ,the search results can be saved and the option given for web search also work for image search.
In my opinion this is a good Re-Start for Ask.com and it throws a tough competition to MSN Search and Yahoo! Search , both have been struggling to get an larger pi of search market and trying out various ways as well ;)

ajaxWrite : Good but long way to go

ajaxWrite launched today , I was excited to see that MS word is directly supported to open/edit as well as to save, it also supportes an option to save as pdf and what more it's a web2.0 application which you can use from any where, any OS :)

So set out to try it myself and here is my feel and feedback.
I used Netscape 8.1 to try ajaxWrite

Pros
- Free :)
- Interface looks just like MS word

- It's easy to get started
- I qucikly created a simple doc and tried to use the feature I normally use in MS Word

- OS independent
- Can access from anywhere
- Loads faster and looks better than similar on-line office app

Cons
- The application took about 10 seconds to load (this can depend on my connection as well :)
- No Advanced Formatting options
- Few Options in Insert Menue (Link and Horizontal Rule) did not work for me :(
I would expect a message to user if the feature is not yet implemented
- Could not Save or Save As the Doc I created :(
I see this Java error 'java.io.IOException:Convertion Failed'
I feel this error is not good from a normal users prespective.
- Table Creation feature is also very weak, there is no flexinility and I could not figure out how to insert rows and columns :(

Overall I feel it's an excellent effort and it's sleek and easy to use, but lot of features available and requred for a Word processor are not yet available, I hope lot more features will be introduced.

Google Finance (Beta) launched :)
The Home page has the prominent Search Box and then the other blocks are Market Summary and Head Lines, the two other block are user specific one lists the quotes user has search for and the other lists the news related to users prefered stocks.

Very nice interface and simple to use with most relevant information on a single page for a stock Eg: http://google.com/finance?q=AAPL
Looks like a cool AJAX based site.

Google and Nike joined hands to create Joga.com for football fans to create and share content. Presently it's Invite only (but doesn't look like a beta) .
One can login using Google account but to again get a message asking us to get an invite from some one who has a Joga account :(
Presently it's an Invite Only service.
This looks like a AJAX application.

Oracle has launched 'Oracle SQL Developer' it's FREE GUI tool for executing,editing and debugging SQL & PL/SQL.
Oracle seems to catching up with Tech community by offering free products, this product is for sure challenge other database vendors and commercial companies who charge user for such tools (TOAD is one such tool which I can remember).MySQL Workbench is also one such tool for MySQL developers but it is still in BETA stage, I request the MySQL team to seed up on this.
This free GUI is supported from Oracle Database version 9.2.0.1 and greater only.
One can download the tool and give it a try.
I think Oracle is doing a great job in this front , I was worried in the way they have been acquiring OpenSource companies. But by offering such products it does make sense in way that, they are sharing the benefit to end user.
